Non Speciifc Esophogeal Motility Disorder

That is what I have. My doctors aren't sure what caused it. A few years ago I used to have MAJOR heartburn, especially in middle of the night. I would wake up with almost like a chest pain and it was just terrible. I would have like 4 or 5 tums before it would settle down. Then I got pregnant and my heartburn pretty much went away. About 6 months into the pregnancy, we thought things were great, no morning sickness, not huge weight gain, things were good, so we thought. Then one day I just couldn't keep my food down. I literally felt like it was stuck and it just wouldn't go down. After about a week of this, we went to the maternity clinic and they prescribed me some ranitadine (zantac) to take before meals. Didn't do much. So then my doctors told me to eat all the high fat/ carb foods I could and don't exercise. The baby wasn't gaining much weight and neither was I. At 7 months and had barely gained 5lbs. So in the end of my pregnancy I gave birth to my beautiful mini Max. He was 4lbs 5oz. No one was really sure what happened. He was healthy but just small and a lil malnourished. Apparently this wan't my fault.. but the placenta wasn't working properly. That and the fact that I couldn't keep down much food.

So now that I wasn't pregnant any more I was able to try different medications to see if anything helped. I still could barely eat anything. I was 145lbs pre pregnancy and at my lowest after pregnancy I was 116lbs!!! way too skinny!!

The first test I had done was a Barium Swallow. Yah the stuff is gross that you have to drink, but this the easiest of the tests that I had done. The results showed what the doctors thought was Achalasia. So I then went on to do a upper endoscopy (scope). It still showed what they thought could be Achalasia. So I had to do one more test, an Esophageal Manometry Test. It was the worst of the tests, I had to have a tube put down my nose and into my esophagus. I couldn't do it the first time, I went by myself and was just freaking out. Next time I want had a bit of a sedative (Ativan) and my husband came along too. This test showed that I did not have Achalasia, my esophagus just didn't work. hmmm OK well now what?!

I am now on a medication called Domperidone. This helps to make the muscles contract. It does help, but I also thinking that I have just been getting better on my own. I wasn't taking it for about 6 months. I think my esophagus is just returning.. slowly.. back to normal. I am back up to a much normal weight, 125lbs and I am able to eat a lot more than. I still have bad days where food just doesn't stay down, but those days are farther in between now :)
